The City of Toronto works to ensure that tenants live in safe, well-maintained buildings through the RentSafeTO: Apartment Building Standards Program. RentSafeTO aims to ensure that building owners and operators comply with building maintenance standards and that tenants understand their rights and responsibilities.

The program applies to all apartment buildings with three or more storeys and ten or more units. Building owners are required to register with the program and renew annually. Information for tenants and building owners is included below.
