Creating Homeownership Opportunities for Social Housing Residents: Freeing up Toronto’s Housing Investments
Committee Decision

The Affordable Housing Committee requested the Director, Affordable Housing Office, in consultation with the General Manager, Shelter, Support and Housing Administration, to coordinate a report to the Affordable Housing Committee in early 2010 on providing affordable ownership opportunities in social housing residents, including:

 

a.         information on the reasons why Toronto social housing residents move;

 

b.         income profile of social housing residents who may be able to afford home ownership;

 

c.         information on the City's current partnerships with affordable home ownership providers and their experience in finding purchasers from the waiting list;

 

d.         options to expand opportunities to make affordable home ownership available to residents on the social housing waiting list and to social housing residents; and

 

e.         placing a particular emphasis on providing ownership to families that are presently living in Toronto Community Housing Corporation units as a means of providing affordable ownership opportunities and freeing up needed affordable rental units.

MultiFaith Alliance to End Homelessness
Committee Decision

The Affordable Housing Committee recommended to the Executive Committee, for its meeting on November 2, 2009 that:

 

1.         City Council endorse in principle Bill C-304 - An Act to ensure secure, adequate, accessible and affordable housing for Canadians.

 

2.         City Council so advise the Prime Minister of Canada, Federal and Provincial Ministers of Housing and Member of Parliament for Vancouver East Libby Davies (BC).

 

3.         City Council urge the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities to schedule public hearings on Bill C-304, a private member's bill calling for the establishment of a national housing strategy, and request to appear before that Committee.

Committee Decision

The Affordable Housing Committee recommended to the Executive Committee that:

 

1.         Deputy City Manager Sue Corke and the Chief Corporate Officer be requested to report directly to the Executive Committee, at its meeting on November 2, 2009, to seek authority to enter into a licence agreement with Toronto Community Housing Corporation for a portion of Fort York Boulevard, adjacent to Bathurst Street in order to facilitate the start of construction of affordable housing on Blocks 32 and 36 of the Railway Lands, by December 1, 2009.
