A City of Toronto job posting includes the job posting date, job posting end date, rate of pay, start date, work location, district and season the work will take place.

A job posting describes the type of work or tasks you will be doing in the role (responsibilities). It provides a list of skills, experiences and certifications that candidates should have or may be required for that role (qualifications).

Format your resume and create a good cover letter with these job application tips.

Each job has a posting date when applications are accepted and a posting end date when applications must be received. Be sure to submit your application before 11:59 p.m. before the job posting end date.

If you want to apply for more than one position you will need to submit separate online applications for each job you are interested in. Each application should have a resume that describes your skills and qualifications for the posting you are applying to.

A confirmation email will be sent to you after you have submitted your application online. Log into your account and select “Jobs Applied” to view the jobs you have applied to and check that your resume was uploaded successfully.

Pre-screening Questionnaire

The pre-screening questionnaire is a few questions you’ll be asked that help us sort the applications we receive. You’ll be invited to an interview if your application shows that you are a good match for the job.

It could be weeks between when you apply online and when you hear from us, so keep a copy of the job posting and the resume you’ve submitted.

What to Expect in an Interview

Interviews are conducted in a panel format where two or more City of Toronto staff will ask you questions, either by phone, in-person or virtually (online). An interview may take up to twenty minutes. You can return to a question to add more to your answer before the interview is over.

Remember to bring any requested paperwork, including references, if your interview is in-person.

Some interviews may have a practical assessment and staff will let you know by email what to expect and how to prepare.

Practical assessments may request a demonstration of your skill in the area you are applying to such as preparing a group activity for a camps position or demonstrating skating skills for a skate job.

Conditional Offer of Employment

After a successful interview (and assessment for some program areas), we will contact your references. Once this step is complete, you will be contacted by a staff person who will let you know the specifics of your new job and next steps. A Conditional Offer of Employment will be emailed to you.

Certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario’s Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) is required for all recreation staff. This course is made available at no cost if you have received a conditional offer of employment.

A conditional offer of employment may be dependent on whether:

  • candidates are required to complete and provide all necessary certifications including First Aid as well as any other mandatory job-related qualifications
  • completed Vulnerable Sector Screening

Vulnerable Sector Screening

One of the requirements for working with children and vulnerable adults is providing the results of a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).

Once a candidate completes online onboarding documentation, candidates that reside in the City of Toronto (postal code starts with “M”) will be sent an email with a voucher code to complete an online VSC application with Toronto Police at no cost. Applicants who reside outside of the City of Toronto will need to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check from their local Police Service at their own cost.

For further information on the vulnerable sector screening, please contact your local Police Service.

Onboarding Paperwork

After you complete your Conditional Offer of Employment, an email will be sent to you with a link to securely upload pictures or scans of the following documents:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) card. If you do not have a SIN card, visit Service Canada. If your Social Insurance Number begins with a 9, you will be asked to include a copy of your current Work Permit.
  • Government-issued photo identification (driver’s license, photo health card, or passport)
  • Banking information to set up direct deposit for your pay including a void cheque (branch transit number, account number). You need to have your own bank account to get paid. Ask your bank to give you a cheque or direct deposit form for your bank account.

New Hire Step Complete

Prior to starting your first day of training, you will need to meet all conditions of employment, which include a Vulnerable Sector Police Check, Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) and First Aid certifications.

Once you receive your Vulnerable Sector Police Check results, PHCD and First Aid certifications, scan or take a photo and email it to your Hiring Manager listed on your conditional offer letter.

Your Hiring Manager will provide you with information on training and next steps
